About one year ago The International Rescue Committee (IRC) opened an office in Denver. The IRC (rescue.org) is committed to providing opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America.

Each year, thousands of people, forced to flee violence and persecution, are welcomed by the people of the United States into the safety and freedom of America. These individuals have survived against incredible odds. The IRC works with government bodies, civil society actors, and local volunteers to help them translate their past experiences into assets that are valuable to their new communities.

Recently the women in a Mormon congregation in Boulder decided to serve these refugees.

“As sisters of the Coal Creek Ward, we collected (new or in good condition) winter coats, hats, gloves, socks and boots as well as toys and stuffies to donate to the International Rescue Committee in Denver. This International organization opened their doors in Denver one year ago and have been able to furnish basic needs for new refugee families solely on donations. Winter items are given to each family when they arrive, so there is always a great need for these items. We were thrilled to collect over 200 total items, the majority of which were winter items.”
In addition to the items collected the 14 fleece blankets were also tied at a church Christmas party which were added to the pile of donated goods.
“It turned out to be a wonderful night of bonding as sisters as we served these families who have so little when they arrive. We hope this will help them feel welcome and loved as they make their new homes in our area.”
